Also, I wanted to thank you for this site. I was one of those people who couldn't get their Windows to recognize the Zen, so i trouble shot and was completely satisfied. Thanks again.

I bought the ZEN x-fi in a hope that In could avoid the whole "Its syncs everything" nightmare you get with Ipods. I was also hoping for hassle free playlist creation, WRONG!!!! Ive tried CENTRALE, WMP and WINAMP and have spent hours and hours at the computer for so little gain. I have 300 mp3s on my ZEN, a modest amount I;m sure you;ll agree, but do you think I can organise them into folders, or some other type of hierachy. Im sick of googling and going to forums, blogs, help pages etc etc etc. I feel a dog chasing its tail. If I was to manually create playlists using the buttons on the ZEN each time, PLAY< SAVE etc etc the technology would be out of date. Why is it so damn difficult to use a WINAMP or WMP and then get the ZEN to actually recognise the playlists (if in fact theyve been created to the ZENS liking that is)

I bet I'm not the only one who;s having trouble with this. Thing is, I wish I could find someone to actually show me, not tell me online, or off some piece of text in a help forum but physically show me what to do, just once..... Sad

um if u want to do it from the zen x-fi, all you gotta do is play a song u want to add to the playlist, then move to other songs and hit the menu button and select "add to selected"  when you've picked out all the songs you want in the playlist go back to "now playing" and hit the menu button and select "save playlist as".  if u ever want to edit existing playlists, simply play a song from one of them and use the "add to selected" feature and then "save playlist as" and put in the same name as the playlist and overwrite.  hope that helps.  as for winamp, which version are you using? it works fine for me

Hi, i'm going to buy legal steroids, what do you think about prohormones? Worth a try? I saw decca at online store, does it work like illegal deca durabolin? Don't want to spam links here, just search in goolge for - prohormones factory - and tell me what do you think about legal steroids they provide.

It is a nightmare....how hard would it have been to add a function to the context menu while playing a song called 'Add to playlist' - then when you press enter it brings up a list of playlist that you can add to?  Duh...  This has been an issue since the first ZEN - you would think they would have 'fixed' it by now.  It is an on-going gripe of mine regarding all mp3 firmware - how poorly designed the user interfaces are.

This is a VERY awkward solution I found whilst playing around with it if you can't get anything else to work.

Step one: Create a playlist on your X-Fi (any playlist at all, saved as any name) by simply selecting the "Save as playlist" option while something is playing.

Step two: Connect your x-fi to your PC

Step three (not neccessary, but makes it easier): Get the "Music" folder up, and go through renaming the files so that they are all just [song name].mp3 or all [artist] - [song name].mp3, pick one or the other but whichever one make sure you do the same for all the files. This will have no effect when using the x-fi as the player uses ID3 tags to display info, not file names. You can rename Raining Blood by Slayer as Hit Me Baby One More Time.mp3, but your Zen will still show it as Raining Blood :p

Step four: Still on your PC, navigate back and then into the "My Playlists" folder. You will see your random playlist created in step one. Right click on it, and select Properties. In the "General" tab (or by renaming the file) you can change the name of the playlist to whatever you want.

Step five: Go to the "References" tab. Here is a list of the song(s) in your playlist. Select them all and click the red X (delete). Now, keep this window open but switch your attention back to the folder. Go back to the "Music" folder again, and now you can drag and drop the files into the "References" list! This is why I recommened renaming the files into an easier to find state, as you now have to think of the song you want to add to the playlist, find the mp3 file (which, remember, does not neccessarily have the same name as how its displayed on your Zen), and then drag and drop.

Tried to make it as newbie friendly as possible for anyone who comes here from google (like I did) who may not know how to use computers so well. Any problems just leave a reply, I'll bookmark and check back occaisionally.

Most easy solution of all.. download creative central or try to find it under <yourPlayerDrive>\Starter Pack.

install the software and create a Playlist. Select the created playlist and then click Transfer from top. You will have a new playlist in your Zen Player. Grin

Yes, a nightmare, but I found out the following:
(As I make a .m3u list using Banshee under Linux, but WinAMP seems to make the same kind of files, even under Windows)

1. unicode no longer necessary (V 1.00.16e, purchased Feb 2012)
2. Use only line entries like \Music\dir\file.mp3  ( or deeper nested ones, like, \Music\dir\dir2\file.mp3 )
    Skip the #remark lines
3. You need such a .m3u file both in \playlist  and in \Music or in \Music\dir or \Music\dir\dir2
4. Still 99 file limit it appears! :-(  Make sub lists...
5. If you want a bigger list, like a complete sub-tree of dirs, copy m3u in both \playlist and in the subroot of that tree.
    So that actually works.

I frequently have a subtree of podcasts from various favourite hosts. And yes, I want to listen to all pods from one guy first, then the next guy.
And this works.

Using Banshee under linux, I found I had to change /  to \  as needed in windows.
Also, I needed unix2dos <file.m3u >tmp.m3u  and   mv tmp.m3u file.m3u  to get a compatible file for dos.

And I needed to remove all comments (lines starting with #) so I did search and replace ^#.+$ with empty string.
(Begin of line, #, any characters, end-of-line) so the entire line disappears. (I used midnight commander, but any editor with RegExp works)

Then, it started to work nicely. If one only could additionally select the directory browser (SD card interface) for the internal memory!
I really prefer that over Music libraries that lock you in. What's more, the info you add, stays in the player. No universal way to export
that info to a generic xml or so.  And the media library interface does not sort across categories/artists/albums... Not flexible enough!

And Apple got this system from Creative???
Hmmm, I'm not seeing any real new developments in this area anywhere anymore!
OK! I'll stick to <DIR>   :-)

Hope it helps for linux guys....

Floris.

With a Quick-Reply you can use bulletin board code and smileys as you would in a normal post, but much more conveniently.
